Procurement

Procurement – Start as you mean to go on.

Choosing the right project delivery method and procurement strategy is key to project success or failure.
There are several types of procurement in the construction industry and the type chosen will depend on a number of things such as available technology, finance, labour resources and the type of project.

  • Traditional procurement:
This separates the design and construction elements where a contractor is appointed to construct the works using a design provided by consultants.
  • Design and Build:
This route is where a main contractor is appointed to design and construct the works.
  • Management Contracting and Construction Management
The basic principle of this type of contracting is that a construction manager administers and co-ordinates a series of “works” contractors.
  • Collaborative working:
This usually involves long term relationships in the shape of framework agreements or strategic partnerships and focusses on ongoing relationships rather than individual projects. This is generally only used by companies or contractors with large operational capacity and for public procurement projects.

Each of the above types of procurement has advantages and disadvantages.
